Sarcopenia and Interventions to Improve Function

Oct 5, 2020 11:00am ‐ Oct 5, 2020 12:00pm

Identification: web201005

Sarcopenia is a critical topic due to the increasing number of individuals developing or being at risk for developing this condition after being discharged from the hospital or in conjunction with other factors such as aging and obesity. This webinar is aimed to discuss sarcopenia within various populations and conditions, as well as address treatment interventions including early mobility and diet modifications in order to improve daily function/living in these individuals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the evidence-based definition of sarcopenia and link to clinically meaningful distal outcomes
  • Describe sarcopenia in the obese individual and interventions that may impact functional outcomes
  • Discuss risk factors for malnutrition and sarcopenia in a national representative sample of older adults

Micronutrient Issues in Pediatrics and Adults

Oct 6, 2020 11:00am ‐ Oct 6, 2020 12:00pm

Identification: web201006

In recent years the topic of malnutrition mainly focused on protein-calorie deficiencies with minimal discussion on malnutrition in the setting of micronutrient deficiencies. Micronutrient issues in pediatrics and adults will address the association of micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition, including the effects both have on the other. This webinar will discuss difficulties in maintaining normal micronutrient levels in individuals secondary to inadequate nutrition intake and excessive nutrition losses due to anatomical changes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify short cut strategies to prevent severe malnutrition in selective eaters
  • Evaluate the micronutrient status, requirements and methods of repletion in adult and pediatric patients with short bowel syndrome
  • Discuss how anatomy of short bowel syndrome affects nutrient absorption

Learning from COVID-19: The Value of Nutrition Across the Care Spectrum

Oct 7, 2020 11:00am ‐ Oct 7, 2020 12:00pm

Identification: web201007a

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought heightened attention to the role that nutrition plays in the immune response to infection, its link to comorbidities that predispose one to the virus, and in the long road to recovery. From their unique perspectives, experts from ASPEN, BAPEN and CNS-CMTF will review the impact of COVID-19, the evidence supporting the integral role of nutrition, and provide valuable insights into the challenges that COVID-19 brings to practitioners across the continuum of care. Strategies and practical solutions to overcome these challenges in intensive care, acute care, primary and long-term care will be discussed. Special considerations for transitions of care between settings will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with the evidence on the importance of nutrition impacting patient outcomes.
  • Understand the challenges faced by those providing nutrition care to those with COVID-19 in different care settings.
  • Learn about the potential and trialed solutions to overcome challenges around nutrition care which could be applied to other disease states or clinical events.

Addressing Malnutrition in the Community

Oct 7, 2020 1:00pm ‐ Oct 7, 2020 2:00pm

Identification: web201007b

Addressing malnutrition will vary depending on the setting, community versus acute care, due to the resources available and the ability to reach individuals. This webinar will address the current community feeding programs for older adults according to the recent GAO report, how community programs can be identified prior to hospital discharge for malnourished or at-risk patients, as well as how screening for food insecurity can help identify possible community malnutrition.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe details about the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on nutrition assistant services for the older adult
  • Identify two steps in which inpatient Registered Dietitians Nutritionists can ensure malnourished patients are screened for food insecurity and are provided with necessary resources upon discharge
  • State the incidence of food insecurity and malnutrition risk in an underserved community setting

Indications for Starting Enteral Nutrition: A Case Approach

Oct 8, 2020 11:00am ‐ Oct 8, 2020 12:00pm

Identification: web201008

Due to the ever changing and increasing complexity of patients’ medical conditions, an Enteral Nutrition Task Force was developed in order to discuss and provide insight into when enteral nutrition would be appropriate. This webinar was chosen as the platform where indications for starting enteral nutrition in specific patients’ conditions and/or disease states would be discussed with health care providers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Detail indications and timing of enteral feeding in mild pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Identify clinical monitoring parameters to assess safe use of enteral nutrition in hemodynamically unstable patients
  • Identify guidelines for using feeding tubes in patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer
