ASPEN is honored to award the 2020 Rhoads Research Lecture to Mette Berger, MD, PhD, from the Lausanne University Hospital, Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Berger is a world-renowned professor and researcher in the field of nutrition and metabolism in critically ill patients. She has spoken globally on the role of micronutrients in major burns, trauma, and patients on continuous renal replacement therapy. Dr. Berger has over 230 peer-reviewed publications and 40 book chapters.

You will not want to miss Dr. Berger discussing the importance of individualized nutrition and micronutrient therapy in recovery after critical illness including tools to determine individual nutrition needs; the differences between enteral and parenteral micronutrient delivery and the advantages and disadvantages of each; the role of micronutrients in antioxidation, immunity and healing, and the risk of acute deficiency; and the importance of monitoring nutrition therapy delivery and response.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain why individualized nutrition therapy is required in critically ill patients
  • List tools available to determine individual nutrition needs (energy, proteins, glucose, micronutrients)
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of enteral and parenteral feeding routes
  • Show the differences between enteral and parenteral nutrition micronutrient delivery
  • Describe the special importance of micronutrients in antioxidation, immunity and healing, and the risk of acute deficiency
  • Describe the importance of monitoring delivery and response to nutrition therapy

Dietitian CE Credit Only: 
This program is approved for RDs, RDNs and DTRs under Activity Type 175 in accordance with CDR guidelines. RDs and RDNs may claim up to 30 CPEUs under this CPE Activity Type in a recertification cycle; DTRs may claim up to 20 CPEUS. For additional information, please click here.
