Description
With the prevalence of obesity at epidemic proportions worldwide, it is not uncommon toencounter a critically ill obese patient in the hospital setting. Not only do obese patients appear tobe at greater risk for complications than nonobese patients, but simply initiating nutrition supportposes a unique challenge. Conventional methods and formulas for estimating nutritionalrequirements may lead to overfeeding safety concerns.Join us for an exciting discussion on nutritional assessment and treatment goals in critically ill obese patients. Evidence will be presented that supports the rationale for hypocaloric, high-protein parenteral and enteral feedings in this patient population.(Note: this session will not be on caring for critically ill obese patients following bariatric surgery.)
