Description

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a complex therapy that may result in serious harm if not properly prescribed, prepared, and administered. The patient who is discharged home on PN for the first time poses significant safety challenges and requires coordination of care between several healthcare disciplines within and outside the hospital. This program will review strategies for successful transition to the home environment; including laboratory management, education and monitoring strategies to improve safety and efficacy of parenteral nutrition therapy for the home patient.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the necessary steps to successfully establish a patient on home parenteral nutrition support
  • Analyze strategies to monitor and avoid long term complications of parenteral nutrition
  • Discuss the role of the Sustain patient registry in quality improvement
