Description

Program Objectives:

  • Learn that micronutrients (vitamins + trace elements)10 are important for all biological processes involving macronutrients and that deficiencies, if left uncorrected, may result in adverse outcomes.
  • Identify micronutrient deficiencies by clinical signs and symptoms.
  • Understand clinical situations needing close attention to micronutrient supplementation (both enteral and parenteral).
  • Appreciate that micronutrient deficiencies are not mere academic curiosities but may occur frequently in hospitalized adult patients.
  • Review how organ dysfunction, concurrent illnesses, and specific medical interventions may affect the disposition of micronutrients (focus on thiamin, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, and vitamin D).
  • Compare the bioavailability and kinetics of different micronutrients in relation to the salt forms and formulations.
  • Discuss the goals and strategies in replacing micronutrient deficiencies and monitoring for clinical responses.
