Dr. Sharon Irving is an Associate Professor of Pediatric Nursing, holds the Miriam Stirl Endowed Term Chair in Nutrition, and is Vice-Chair of Graduate Education in the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. In the faculty role, she participates in formal and informal education of pre-licensure and graduate nursing students. She is clinically active as a Nurse Practitioner and is the Clinical Nurse Scientist in pediatric critical care at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Dr. Irving’s inquiry and scholarship focus on nutrition therapy for critically ill infants and children. Her work focuses on anthropometry, nutrient requirements, and delivery, monitoring feeding tolerance, and evaluating patient response. Dr Irving prides herself on engaging in interdisciplinary approaches to clinical practice, research inquiry, and quality improvement initiatives. Her work and commitment and ongoing involvement in the field of nutrition as therapy have earned her fellowships in critical care medicine, the American Academy of Nursing, the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), and the Leonard Davis Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Irving is the recipient of the 2023 faculty award for Women of Color at the University of Pennsylvania.
