Emeritus Professor Gil Hardy, PhD, FRSC, FASPEN trained as a biochemist and carried out research in the Metabolic Research Laboratory of Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Sir Hans Krebs at the University of Oxford and developed the first 3 litre bag for improving administration of parenteral nutrition (PN) regimens for patients with intestinal failure. He has over 240 publications from his extensive research with lipids, glutamine, selenium and other novel substrates, for PN formulations. A founder and Council member of BAPEN and chair of the British Pharmaceutical Nutrition Group, Gil has served on Council of the UK and NZ Nutrition Societies, as vice president of AuSPEN and is a faculty member of ESPEN. He attended the first ASPEN congress in Chicago in 1977 and has been associated with ASPEN ever since, most recently serving on the Research, Membership and FASPEN committees. His research activities have established an international reputation with awards and honorary fellowships from Asia, Australasia, Europe, Latin America and USA, including the Distinguished International Nutrition Support Specialist Award from ASPEN in 2014. Dr Hardy was the first chairman of the international clinical nutrition section (ICNS) and in 2020 he was appointed to serve on the ASPEN Board of Directors.
