Teresa Zimmers, PhD, is the HH Gregg Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and Research Scientist at the Richard Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center. She is founding Vice President of the Cancer Cachexia Society. Dr. Zimmers is a molecular biologist with research interests in organ growth regulation, inflammation, and the systemic response to injury and cancer. Her work has implicated myostatin/GDF11/Activin/SMADs, Interleukin-6/STAT3, hedgehog and other secreted proteins in regulation of muscle and fat wasting. She seeks to identify mediators and mechanisms of cachexia to improve quality of life and chance of cure in patients with cancer and other chronic diseases.
