W. Timothy (Tim) Garvey MD

Dr. Garvey is Professor of Nutrition Sciences at University of Alabama at Birmingham. He obtained his MD from St. Louis University, medicine residency at Washington University, and endocrinology fellowship at University of Colorado and University of California, San Diego. He subsequently was faculty at the University of California, Indiana University, Director of Endocrinology at Medical University of South Carolina, and Chair of Nutrition Sciences at UAB 2003-2018. Dr. Garvey has achieved international recognition for his research in the metabolic and molecular pathogenesis of insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity. He has over 325 original publications and book chapters and is the PI of the UAB Diabetes Research Center funded by NIH/NIDDK. Dr. Garvey has also developed an intense interest in our understanding of obesity as a disease, in advancing medical models to improve the care of the obese patient, and in societal attitudes and policies relevant to obesity treatment. He developed Cardiometabolic Disease Staging (CMDS) which enables clinicians to identify those patients with obesity at highest risk of future Type 2 Diabetes. He is the principal architect of the complications centric approach to obesity management, lead author on the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology Obesity Guidelines.
