A member of ASPEN since 1981 and a former President of ASPEN, I have been active in the use of nutrition support for cancer patients and research of related issues my entire career. I am currently a Professor of Surgery and the Associate Director for Faculty Affairs at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. My clinical and research activities have necessitated that I concern myself with best practices in speaking with cancer patients and their families/friends. "Bad news" is bad news, but the ways in which we communicate difficult situations and choices to patients and their loved ones can make a big difference in the way people understand their situation and the choices available to them.
