Joy McVey Hugick is a seasoned public health policy and communication consultant. While serving patient populations during her career in public health, Joy became a patient herself in August 2010 with an acute onset of symptoms, which was later diagnosed as post-viral gastroenteropathy causing severe dysmotility throughout her gastrointestinal tract. More recently, following recurrent episodes of colitis, Joy had her colon removed. Since 2010, Joy has predominantly been on home enteral nutrition (HEN) with a few stints on home parenteral nutrition (HPN). Blending her public health acumen with her experiences living with feeding tube, temporary loop ileostomy, and chronic gastrointestinal condition, Joy provides peer-to-peer support to consumers and caregivers, as well as advocates for HPEN by providing the patient / consumer perspective to healthcare providers, manufacturers, and policymakers. Joy's commitment to the HPEN community includes serving as Vice President of the Oley Foundation Board of Trustees, Oley Ambassador, and consumer representative on the FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee. Joy resides in Atlanta with her husband, Brad, and possesses an undeniable passion for philanthropic endeavors and enjoys volunteering, practicing yoga, reading, cooking, knitting and spending time with her family. Joy is the 2021 recipient of the ASPEN Lyn Howard Nutrition Support Consumer Advocacy Award.
