Rachel Kassel completed undergraduate at the University of GA, MD and PhD degrees at the University of Virginia, pediatrics residency and GI fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.
Rachel is an Associate Professor in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at the University of Alabama Birmingham. She is outpatient clinical director for GI. Her clinical interests are in feeding, malnutrition, and complex care. She is the GI director for the Aerodigestive and Multidisciplinary Feeding Programs.
She is site PI for 2 NIH funded studies: one looking at immune progression in celiac disease and another the effect of hyperhydration in children with Shiga toxin producing E. coli infections.
Additionally, she works on quality improvement projects including improved care for patients with severe pharyngeal dysphagia. In collaboration with colleagues, she advocates for resources for children with chronic diseases.
