Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe different etiologies of renal dysfunction and how to classify them as either acute or chronic.
  2. Summarize the impact of renal dysfunction in the critically ill on subsequent renal disease, morbidity, and mortality.
  3. Differentiate between modes of renal replacement therapy and describe how citrate-based anticoagulation can influence nutrition prescriptions.
  4. Compare and contrast the energy and protein requirements of critically ill patients with renal dysfunction, both with and without renal replacement therapy. Discuss the factors that influence these needs and the potential implications for nutrition support.
  5. Summarize common electrolyte derangements seen with renal dysfunction and describe anticipated adjustments to enteral and parenteral nutrition support prescriptions for these patients both on and off renal replacement therapy.
  6. Recognize the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in critically ill patients with renal dysfunction who are receiving different types of renal replacement therapy. Discuss the factors contributing to these deficiencies and potential strategies for prevention and management.
