PN Safety Series Part 4: Strategies to Optimize Safety during Parenteral Nutrition Administration

Goals and Target Audience:
The PN safety training series is designed for dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, physicians and other healthcare professionals who are involved in the provision of PN to patients in all settings from the hospital to home. The training series is designed to educate healthcare professionals on safe PN practices to then empower those individuals to modify processes within their organizations.

Successful Completion
Each enduring program in the four part series is accredited separately. To obtain credit for each enduring program, participants must listen to the recording in full, pass the post test with a score of 100% and complete an evaluation via the electronic CE system in A.S.P.E.N.’s eLearning Center, which is accessible from any internet connection at www.nutritioncare.org/elearning. Participants may log in using the email address and password on file with A.S.PE.N.

Please note, to receive the Certificate of Training in Parenteral Nutrition Safety, participants must successfully complete all four enduring programs and claim CE credits for each.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common types of PN administration errors.
  • Describe system-based strategies to enhance the safety of PN administration.
  • List factors that promote or inhibit the use of the PN Safety Consensus Recommendations in the administration phase of PN.
  • Propose action items to promote use of the PN Safety Consensus Recommendations for PN administration.

In support of improving patient care, The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

A.S.P.E.N. designates each enduring activity for a maximum of 1.5 contact hours (0.15 CEUs) per activity.  Knowledge activities.

A.S.P.E.N. designates this [each] enduring activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM per activity. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
