The 2018 Dudrick Award winner, Gail A. Cresci, PhD, RD, LD, CNSC, has the honor of planning the Dudrick Research Symposium at ASPEN19. Dr. Cresci is an army veteran who has worked in the field of nutrition for over 26 years as a clinical nutrition support dietitian and a translational researcher. She is currently an assistant professor with a joint appointment in both the Department of Gastroenterology/Hepatology and the Department of Pathobiology, the nutrition thread leader at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, and a gastroenterology researcher at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Dr. Cresci conducts critical lab-based science and clinical research, focusing on the gut microbiota. Her research includes animal models of ethanol-induced gut-liver injury, as well as antibiotic-induced intestinal and immune dysfunction, with an emphasis on the growth of Clostridium difficile. With these models, she is working to develop targeted probiotic and prebiotic therapies to mitigate disease.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the role of the human gut microbiota in health and disease and factors influencing its composition
  • List health aspects of prebiotics and what can they do in terms of gut functionality
  • Discuss approaches to manipulating the microbiome and the characterization of live biotherapeutic products
  • Summarize microbial effectors that manipulate host metabolic outcomes
  • Outline the types of intervention designs used to study diet-gut microbiome interactions in humans and review findings from recent interventions testing the effects of diet on the microbiome and the microbiome’s effect on dietary exposures
