Protein in the Critically Ill Patient: What do we really know?

‐ Oct 16, 2019 12:30pm

Credits: None available.

Questions to be Addressed:

  • What stimulates muscle synthesis? How does this differ in the ICU patient? Does it differ based on the age of the patient? What is the preferential protein source(s) to stimulate muscle synthesis and/or minimize muscle breakdown?
  • The current literature speaks to the importance of protein in the critically ill patient but has left many unanswered questions. Does protein source and/or route of administration make a difference? What role does exercise/physical therapy or other therapies play in optimizing muscle mass?
  • How does the science behind protein needs, muscle protein synthesis and utilization in the critically ill patient translate to patient care?
