OBJECTIVES: • Discuss evidence for preoperative nutrition screening and nutrition optimization to improve outcomes in centers with or without an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program • Summarize the implementation and results of a novel, structured, perioperative nutrition program • Describe how perioperative nutrition protocols can be implemented, how to overcome the barriers and challenges to implementation, and a new integrated role for registered dietitians in the perioperative process
