The Metabolic Response in SIRS: Management Strategies to Promote Positive Outcomes
The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is characterized by increased inflammatory mediators and altered metabolic cycles which can result in significant nutritional impairment. What strategies exist for influencing potential negative outcomes of an unabated metabolic response? What is the role of pharmaconutrients in modulating the inflammatory response in SIRS? Join us to learn the role of individual nutrients and/or specialty enteral formulas in promoting positive outcomes and the benefits of combined parenteral and enteral nutrition support therapy in those undergoing the SIRS response.
At the conclusion of this presentation the learner will be able to:
Describe the metabolic milieu associated with SIRS and its associated effects on patient outcomes.
Outline key nutrients both individually or in enteral formulas that have beneficial effects in patients with SIRS.
Outline the potential role and benefits of combined enteral and parenteral nutrition therapy in influencing the energy deficit common in those with SIRS.
