Learn how to assess a patient requiring PN and initiate and manage their PN therapy. The online modules will emphasize the concepts of PN order writing and management. Course participants will then come together for application of the knowledge gained through work in small groups on sample patient cases with distinguished faculty experts via Zoom.
Learning Objectives
Determine when parenteral nutrition (PN) is an appropriate nutrition intervention for a given patient
Create and write a PN prescription determining appropriate macro- and micronutrients according to the patient’s nutrition assessment including 1. Initiation of PN 2. Advancement to goal 3. Adjustment of electrolytes based on abnormal patient laboratory values and use of medications 4. Eventual weaning off PN
Differentiate PN requirements based on patient age and clinical diagnosis
Formulate a safe PN prescription accounting for compounding compatibility and stability limits
Develop PN writing competencies for clinicians involved with prescribing, compounding, and administering PN
* Improve the quality and safety of all patients/consumers receiving nutrition support
